Final touches on the Nickel Plate Trail continue as we approach its official opening. To build on last month’s Nickel Plate Trail update, BRAG wanted to expand on some of the safety considerations for trail users and motorists.
Safety features like pedestals and traffic signals, wood fencing along portions of the trail, collapsible bollards, and “yield” and “stop” signs continue to be installed along the trail. These collapsible bollards have been installed at key locations to deter motor vehicles from accessing the trail.
As we all prepare for the trail’s opening, it’s important motorists keep in mind to share the road with pedestrians and cyclists who are crossing local streets, or who may be heading to, or coming from the Nickel Plate Trail.
Please be aware of signage and pavement markings as you approach trail crossings and follow the posted speed limit of 30 mph (or in some cases 20 mph) at trail crossings.
Trail lighting, signage, and crossing signals continue to be installed along the trail. It should be noted there is a 20 mph speed limit on Indianapolis trails.
There are also some restrictions and regulations regarding e-bikes and other mobility devices on trails. Certain e-bikes that use a throttle (class A and B) are also not allowed on Indianapolis trails and greenways.
Lastly, please remember the Nickel Plate Trail remains a CONSTRUCTION SITE and is closed to the public. We’re all excited about the trail’s opening, but please do your part to stay off the trail for now so the City’s contractors can safely and effectively finish up their work. Thanks for your patience!
