Hello North District neighbors!
Understanding Larceny from Vehicles (Theft from a Motor Vehicle)
Unlike stealing an entire automobile, larceny from a vehicle focuses on property taken from inside, outside, or attached to the vehicle while the vehicle itself is left behind. Thieves typically target unattended cars in crowded lots, looking for quick scores.
- The Incident: In most cases, break-ins happen without forced entry because vehicle doors were left unlocked. When force is used, it takes seconds for a thief to smash a window, grab visible valuables, and disappear before anyone notices.
- The Legal Context (Indiana Code § 35-43-4-2): Under Indiana law, Theft is defined as knowingly or intentionally exerting unauthorized control over property of another person with intent to deprive them of its value. Theft from a vehicle is a serious offense, with penalties increasing to a Level 6 Felony based on the value of the stolen property or if specific items like firearms are involved.
- Important Indiana Legal Reminder: Drivers in Indiana are legally required to carry their physical vehicle registration on their person or in their immediate possession while operating a vehicle. Leaving your registration unsecured in your glove compartment exposes you to identity theft if your car is targeted.
- Real-World Example: A group parks near a stadium event lot, tossing a laptop bag under the front seat and leaving a jacket and loose cash on the console. They hit the lock button on their key fob as they walk away without double-checking the handle. A thief walking the row spots the items through the window, opens the unlocked door, and takes off with the bag, jacket, and glove box documents before the event even starts.
Mr. G’s Safety Tips: Clean Car Protocol
- Practice the “Clean Car” Rule: Leave absolutely nothing visible inside your vehicle. Stash bags, electronics, charging cords, backpacks, and loose change out of sight in the trunk before you arrive at your parking destination.
- Take Your Registration & Personal Docs With You: Keep your physical vehicle registration and personal identification in your wallet or purse, never leave them sitting in the glove box or center console.
- Lock It and Double-Check: Don’t rely solely on the key fob chirp. Physically pull the door handle to confirm your vehicle is locked before walking away, as signal interference or battery dips can prevent locks from engaging.
- Park Bright, Park Busy: Choose well-lit, high-visibility lots or garage floors with active foot traffic or visible security cameras. Avoid parking in dark, secluded corners or unmonitored perimeter lots.
Mr. G’s Final Notes
Enjoy the crisp fall weather, playoff pushes, and fantastic weekend events across Indy! A little extra prep before you step away from your driver’s seat goes a long way toward keeping your belongings safe. Lock your doors, clear your seats, keep your registration on you, and keep looking out for one another. Have a great week and keep North District safe!
